Most people who love the look of fluffy white dogs have to deal with tear stain. It is not just fluffy white dogs that are affected – other breeds suffer from tear stain too.

In all these dogs, tear stain are usually due to an excess of bacteria or yeast growth, specifically an organism called “red yeast” which leaves reddish-brown facial stains and possibly even an unpleasant odour. The bacteria and yeast thrive in moisture and are particularly attracted to the tear ducts in the eye.

In some cases, tear staining can be due to allergies to food or the environment, for example it could be linked to the change of seasons.

As most tear stains are due to an overgrowth of bacteria and yeast, your best bet to eliminating them completely, is to control and eradicate these organisms. Pampered Paws and Whiskers Tear Stain Remover contains Eye Bright- a primary herb for use in eye conditions; Colloidal Silver- a powerful natural antibiotic and antiseptic; Sea Salt- rich in minerals which helps soothes and dry out facial hair.

Whilst using Pampered Paws and Whiskers Tear Stain Remover, add Cider Vinegar to your dog’s drinking water - 1 teaspoon of Cider Vinegar per 500ml water is ideal. This will change the pH levels in your dog slightly and will do wonders in the tear stain war by helping eliminate bacteria, deep stain colour and prevent yeast build up.

It may take a while for your dog to “decide” to drink this water, so start with a little less and gradually increase the amount of vinegar.

Another option, which can be discussed with your vet, is to put your dog on a very low dose of antibiotics which will eliminate bacterial overgrowth. However this is a last resort and will not stop it coming back.

Always go with the least invasive treatment first and give it some time to work.

Some pet foods with artificial colourings can stain hair around the mouth area. They may also be absorbed into your dog’s system, and eventually be excreted through the tear ducts. I have recently changed my dogs to an additive free dry food and give them fresh meat only. Every little change helps!
